September 2009

President’s Message

Well fellow apiarists, greetings and salutation!  How are you?  How are your bees?  How was your summer?  The people I’ve talked with have generally had a ‘modest’ honey harvest.  For you first year keepers, your suspicions are right.  This is not a typical bee year-lots of rain and cool temps for extended periods of time have throttling affects on the bees.  So, back to the “How are your bees?” part.  They’re still there? Good for you!  Moving forward it’s now time for the fall management and winter prep phase of the beekeeping year to be implemented.

As a way to begin answering questions and discussing Fall Mgmt. and Winter prep approaches we’re beginning our 2009-2010 year with a Club meeting on Sunday, September 20th.  It’ll be a combination hive opening/meeting/cookout affair.  The hive opening will be at 12 noon followed by a brief business meeting, and then a potluck cookout.  This will provide you with a lot of time to discuss your journey so far and plan for the next leg.  We’re looking to have either Wayne or EZ or Ray or maybe, just maybe Dr. Ziegler a gent who is involved with apitherapy.  As you can tell as this goes to press that part isn’t finalized.

Why Sunday?  And why the potluck?  Over the years there have been numerous inquiries and interest shown, from a wide range of people, for more opportunity to get together and talk bees.  The Club meetings afford some time for that, but people want more time.  Seemed like a good idea.  Then Jeani suggested let’s meet at her house.  It’s still warm in September, she has 3 hives all of varying strength, there’s ample parking, and a deck that can handle a crowd.  So voila!  Sunday, September 20th at Jeani’s it is.  Her address and directions are listed elsewhere in the letter.

Good for now.  Good idea Jeani and Thank You for hosting.  You new bees, “Keep the Faith” and Good Day.  Greg

Rehoboth à  Rochester à  Francis Farm Fair

Our next and last fair for this year will be held at Francis Farm in Rehoboth, October 3 and 4.  This will be our first time there, but word is, it’s aggie-themed which ought to fit well.  We’re looking to staff our table from 10-4ish in 2-hour shifts.  People in the Rehoboth area are most helpful, proximity wise, but if you are in S. Bristol County and enjoy a booth, well do we have an opportunity for you!  Now, we can only take 12 people to fill up the schedule, 2/shift, 3 shifts/day, so call early to get your spot.  Thanks Norma for the head’s up.  Call who?  Greg at 823-6836 will do it.
